La Sierra: Disfrutando Ecuador
The volunteers danced into a new week by learning the basics of salsa, bachata, zapateado, and cumbia. Many of the volunteers felt connected to Latin culture when learning the dances. The dancing brought the group together to celebrate their second week in Ecuador.
The week was defined by spending time with host families. For the majority of volunteers, this trip has been the first time they have experienced a homestay. After the first few days of nervousness the volunteers really settled into it and started to make memories with their families. Some families took their volunteers to El Centro de Cuenca to eat food, visit sites, and do some shopping. Some volunteers tried new foods with their families such as cuy (cooked guinea pig). One family even went to a wedding, while others saw soccer games and visited restaurants. This week was a time of connection and building relationships. Overall, getting to know host families has been a unique and special experience that volunteers will hold on to.
Los voluntarios bailaron en una nueva semana aprendiendo los conceptos básicos de salsa, bachata, zapateado y cumbia. Muchos de los voluntarios se sintieron conectados con la cultura latina al aprender los bailes. El baile reunió al grupo para celebrar su segunda semana en Ecuador.
La semana estuvo definida por pasar tiempo con las familias anfitrionas. Para la mayoría de los voluntarios, este viaje ha sido la primera vez que experimentan una estadía en una familia. Después de los primeros días de nerviosismo, los voluntarios realmente se adaptaron y comenzaron a crear recuerdos con sus familias. Algunas familias llevaron a sus voluntarios a El Centro de Cuenca para comer, visitar sitios y hacer algunas compras. Algunos voluntarios probaron nuevos alimentos con sus familias como el cuy (cuy cocido). Una familia incluso fue a una boda, mientras que otros vieron partidos de fútbol y visitaron restaurantes. Esta semana fue un tiempo de conexión y construcción de relaciones. En general, conocer a las familias anfitrionas ha sido una experiencia única y especial que los voluntarios conservarán.
The next day, the group went to El Cajas, an Ecuadorian national park. The park contains 234 lakes as well as a ton of wildlife. The group completed a five hour hike through the park. They learned about plants and flowers endemic to the park. While walking through the “magic forest” the volunteers learned about a plant that the Incas used on their enemies. They would mix the plant into tea and nine days later the enemies would be killed. The volunteers enjoyed being immersed in the wilderness of the national park. The group shared that the special part of being in the park was being completely isolated. It was extremely quiet, only hearing what was directly in front of them. It was a tranquil experience.
The following day the group experienced a switch in their environment by traveling to El Centro. The center of the city, Cuenca. The day started with a scavenger hunt which included discovering new fruits, naming rivers, running a track, and more. This activity allowed the group to visit the whole city. Afterwards, the group had free time to go shopping and visit cafes.
Al día siguiente, el grupo fue a El Cajas, un parque nacional ecuatoriano. El parque contiene 234 lagos, así como una gran cantidad de vida silvestre. El grupo completó una caminata de cinco horas por el parque. Aprendieron sobre plantas y flores endémicas del parque. Mientras caminaban por el “bosque mágico”, los voluntarios aprendieron sobre una planta que los incas usaban con sus enemigos. Mezclarían la planta en té y nueve días después mataría a los enemigos. Los voluntarios disfrutaron de estar inmersos en la naturaleza salvaje del parque nacional. El grupo compartió que la parte especial de estar en el parque era estar completamente aislado. Estaba extremadamente silencioso, solo se escuchaba lo que estaba directamente frente a ellos. Fue una experiencia tranquila.
Al día siguiente, el grupo experimentó un cambio en su entorno al viajar a El Centro. El centro de la ciudad, Cuenca. El día comenzó con una búsqueda del tesoro que incluyó descubrir nuevas frutas, nombrar ríos, correr una pista y más. Esta actividad permitió al grupo visitar toda la ciudad. Posteriormente, el grupo tuvo tiempo libre para ir de compras y visitar cafeterías.
Afterwards, the group visited the Puma Pungo, a ministry (museum) of Ecuadorian culture and patrimony. There was cultural textile, pottery, clothing, and money exhibits. There was also a bird sanctuary. The museum even highlighted each of the four Ecuadorian regions. The volunteers felt more enlightened about the country they have been staying in for the past two weeks.
Sunday was the first time volunteers spent the entire day with their host families. The volunteers had the opportunity to learn more about the Ecuadorian culture through spending time together with their host moms, dads, and siblings. During the afternoon, volunteers were able to further experience Ecuador through a parade that highlighted all the towns of Cuenca. There was a parade through Sayausi. Each town had an elected princess and cholitas that walked through the parade. There were traditional folkloric dances, costumes, and many horses. It was a beautiful cultural experience for all the volunteers.
Luego el grupo visitó el Puma Pungo, un ministerio (museo) de la cultura y el patrimonio ecuatoriano. Hubo exhibiciones culturales de textiles, cerámica, ropa y dinero. También había un santuario de aves. El museo incluso destacó cada una de las cuatro regiones ecuatorianas. Los voluntarios se sintieron más informados sobre el país en el que se han estado quedando durante las últimas dos semanas.
El domingo fue la primera vez que los voluntarios pasaron todo el día con sus familias anfitrionas. Los voluntarios tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender más sobre la cultura ecuatoriana al pasar tiempo con sus familias anfitrionas. Durante la tarde los voluntarios pudieron vivir aún más el Ecuador a través de un desfile que destacó todos los pueblos de Cuenca. Hubo un desfile por Sayausi. Cada pueblo tenía una princesa elegida y cholitas que desfilaban. Hubo bailes folclóricos tradicionales, disfraces y muchos caballos. Fue una hermosa experiencia cultural para todos los voluntarios.
