Los Santos
Hey everyone! We’re having a great time in our host community! We volunteer on the coffee farms every morning (Monday to Friday) for three hours. One thing we have worked on is digging level paths between the rows of plants. It is so cool to see how the coffee we drink back at home is grown and processed. The views from the coffee farm, or finca, are truly incredible. We also facilitate extracurricular activities with kids in the afternoons. We play games with them like tag and I spy and we also have time for drawing and crafts. For our community service project, we have activities in the elderly home like BINGO, drawing, and dance classes. The elderly people are so sweet and it is so fun to see the looks on their faces when they win a prize. We also enjoy exploring the town and trying looks of yummy food!

¡Hola a todos! ¡Nos lo estamos pasando genial en nuestra comunidad anfitriona! Somos voluntarias en las fincas de café todas las mañanas (lunes a viernes) durante tres horas. Una cosa en la que hemos trabajado es cavando entre las hileras de plantas. Es genial ver cómo se cultiva y procesa el café que bebemos en casa. Las vistas desde la finca de café son realmente increíbles. También facilitamos actividades extraescolares con niños por las tardes. Jugamos con ellos y también tenemos tiempo para dibujar y hacer manualidades. Para nuestro proyecto de servicio comunitario, tenemos actividades en el hogar de tercera edad como BINGO, dibujo y clases de baile. Las personas mayores son tan dulces y es tan divertido ver la expresión de sus rostros cuando ganan un premio. ¡También disfrutamos explorando la ciudad y probando comida deliciosa!

Notes from Rose / Notas de Rose
Hola amigos (hello friends)! Rose here writing from my host community – and I can confidently say my time here has been incredibly special. Just in the past week, so much has happened. My partner, Sylvia, and I have woken up bright and early to volunteer on a coffee farm that belongs to a host family. It is completely worth the early mornings and muddy pants because the views we see from the gaps in the coffee and avocado trees are indescribable.
Depending on the day and where we are working, we either see some of the surrounding towns, or some of the most lush, green mountains my eyes have ever laid upon. Additionally, this week, our community project is up and running! On Wednesday, two local youth hosted their first Baile Típico (traditional dance) class and Sylvia, and I got to join! They showed us some of their choreography and taught a dance. We got to try out wearing the skirts (although I was a little embarrassed by the combination of the beautiful blue skirt and my Tevas).
Come the weekend, our host family took us on a day trip to a neighboring town where a friend of theirs lives on a property with a little bit of everything. From flowers to peacocks, to a horse to coffee trees and frogs – what was most awe inspiring was the two boyeros (bulls) eating their lunch right next to us. We learned they use their strength to operate a large machine to extract the juice from sugar cane – we even got the chance to push the yolk. We then drove home and per usual, Sylvia and I were mesmerized by the sights. We’ve come to the agreement that, if possible, we would drive around Costa Rica for an eternity just to be able to take it all in. One day soon I hope to return, but for now all we have left are a couple short weeks to enjoy. Thank you, AMIGOS and all my project staff, for making this experience possible.
¡Hola, amigos! Soy Rose, escribiendo de mi comunidad anfitriona – y puedo decir con confianza que mi tiempo aquí ha sido increíblemente especial. Sólo en la última semana, han pasado muchas cosas. Mi compañera, Sylvia, y yo nos hemos levantado muy temprano para hacer trabajo voluntario en una finca de café de una familia anfitriona. Vale la pena las madrugadas y pantalones embarrados porque las vistas que vemos desde los espacios de los cafetales son indescriptibles.
Dependiendo del día y donde estemos trabajando, veremos alguna de las comunidades cercanas o algunas de las montañas más verdes y exuberantes que mis ojos hayan visto. Además, esta semana, ¡nuestro proyecto comunitario está en marcha! El miércoles, dos jóvenes locales fueron las maestras de su primera clase de Baile Típico y Sylvia y yo pudimos unirnos. Nos mostraron algunas de sus coreografías y enseñaron un baile que pudimos probar con las faldas (aunque me dio un poco de vergüenza la combinación de la linda falda azul y mis Tevas).
Este fin de semana, nuestra familia anfitriona nos llevó a un viaje a una comunidad vecina por un día, donde un amigo de ellos vive en una propiedad con un poco de todo. De flores a pavos reales, de un caballo a cafetales y ranas – lo más impresionante fueron los dos boyeros (toros) almorzando junto a nosotros. Aprendimos que usan su fuerza para operar una gran máquina para extraer el jugo de la caña de azúcar. Luego fuimos a casa y, como de costumbre, Sylvia y yo quedamos hipnotizados por las vistas. Hemos llegado al acuerdo de que, si es posible, conduciríamos por Costa Rica durante una eternidad solo para poder asimilarlo todo. Un día pronto espero regresar, pero por ahora todo lo que nos queda son dos semanas para disfrutar. Gracias, AMIGOS y todo el personal de mi proyecto, por hacer posible esta experiencia.
