Los Santos: Entre Cafetales
We arrived at our host community Friday afternoon (6/23) and although we stepped into a new world from the one we left, we have never felt more welcomed by our host family. Our first week has been incredible—surrounded by lovely people. Overall we have been doing great spending time with our host family and each other. Our host mother’s house is filled with love, the big family is constantly coming and going from the house—there is never a dull moment.
Llegamos a nuestra comunidad anfitriona el viernes por la tarde (23/6) y aunque entramos en un mundo nuevo al que dejamos atrás, nunca nos habíamos sentido más bienvenidas por nuestra familia anfitriona. Nuestra primera semana fue increíble, rodeadas de gente encantadora. En general, lo hemos pasado genial pasando tiempo con nuestra familia anfitriona y entre nosotras. La casa de nuestra madre anfitriona está llena de amor, la gran familia está constantemente entrando y saliendo de la casa, nunca hay un momento aburrido.
The food has been amazing and never fails to amaze with the bounds of flavors and the love put into it. The other day we made tortillas—all you need is water, corn flour, and a pinch of salt. We used the heel of our palm to widen the dough and just like that we threw it into the pan. We also get hot chocolate in the mornings which is SO GOOD and is usually accompanied by some sweet bread.
La comida ha sido increíble y nunca deja de sorprender con la variedad de sabores y el amor que se le pone. El otro día hicimos tortillas, solo necesita agua, harina de maíz y una pizca de sal. Usamos el talón de nuestra mano para extender la masa y así la lanzamos al sartén. También tomamos chocolate caliente por las mañanas, ¡que está DELICIOSO! Y generalmente lo acompañamos con pan dulce.
The animals here are so adorable! There are cows, chickens, and some goats that we might try and milk soon!! Yesterday while working on our host family’s farm we got to plant some avocado trees and gosh, it was hard work. Chelsey was put on the job to dig and who knew dirt was so difficult to dig up? It turned out great though and the trees will be fruitful in eight years. Our host family said that in the future when they eat the avocados from these trees, they will remember us.
¡Los animales aquí son tan adorables! Hay vacas, gallinas y algunas cabras que pronto intentaremos ordeñar. Ayer, mientras trabajábamos en la finca de nuestra familia anfitriona, plantamos algunos árboles de aguacate y vaya, fue un trabajo duro. Chelsey se encargó de cavar y ¿quién se iba a imaginar que la tierra era tan difícil de desenterrar? Pero al final salió genial y los árboles darán fruto dentro de ocho años. Nuestra familia anfitriona dijo que en el futuro, cuando se coman los aguacates de estos árboles, nos recordarán.
Costa Rica in general has been amazing. The views: insane. You see a new beautiful thing every time you look out into the mountains. Walking the hills to the center of town is tiring but it’s worth it for the views. We recently spoke to the director of the school and the president of the development association about our extracurricular activities and community project. It was difficult communicating everything in Spanish, but it feels great to be taking these steps. We then rewarded ourselves with a sweet pastry. There is so much more to talk about, but we’ll cut it off here for now.
Costa Rica en general ha sido increíble. Los paisajes: bellísimos. Cada vez que miramos hacia las montañas, vemos algo hermoso y nuevo. Caminar por las colinas hacia el centro del pueblo es agotador, pero vale la pena por las vistas. Recientemente hablamos con la directora de la escuela y el presidente de la asociación de desarrollo sobre nuestras actividades extracurriculares y el proyecto comunitario. Fue difícil comunicar todo en español, pero se siente genial dar estos pasos. Luego nos recompensamos con un pastelito dulce. Hay mucho más de qué hablar, pero lo dejaremos aquí por ahora.
