Los Santos: Excursions and Volunteering
Hello, this is Wesley and Ella. Over the course of this week, we enjoyed many authentic experiences. On the fifth day, we walked from Cedrela into the town of Copey and played volleyball and basketball. We also stopped by a little supermarket, called a “Pulperia” here, for a taste of Costa Rican snacks. For lunch, we visited a restaurant next to a waterfall, which was an exciting experience accompanied by great food. We then stayed at Cedrela for the afternoon and learned the basics of Merengue dance.
The next day, we got an early start and took the 40-minute walk to Copey again alongside a truck of staff members from Cedrela. With black trash bags and plastic gloves, we collected trash around the town, like cans and wrappers, for a couple of hours. On our way back, we found a bird on the side of the road that had passed away. To honor the bird, some of us brought him to the town cemetery for a proper burial and left it flowers we had collected. For the rest of the day, we rested at Cedrela with lunch, dinner, and a slate of Spanish lessons.
The next day, we volunteered at four different coffee farms and were assigned various tasks by the families we were working with. Some of us worked digging trenches on the coffee farms and others fertilizing the grounds. After volunteering all morning and eating lunch with our families, we went to the high school in Copey to meet the kids there and get to know them. We headed back to Cedrela and ended the night by watching the movie Baby Driver as a birthday celebration.
We split into two groups and went on different excursions, one to a Rio Blanco queso farm and the other to a strawberry farm. We tried cheese and strawberries while learning about what it takes to harvest and create different products.
Now, we are headed into our second half of the trip, the start of which is marked by switching lodge locations. After volunteering the morning of Day 10, July 22, we arrived at Cecilia’s, a colorful slew of cabanitas in the city of Santa Maria. We are excited to begin the next part of the trip here!
Los Santos: ¡Excursiones y voluntariados!
Hola, somos Wesley y Ella. Esta semana disfrutamos de muchas experiencias auténticas. El día 5, nosotros caminamos desde Cedrela al pueblo de Copey y jugamos voleibol y baloncesto. Además, nosotros fuimos a un supermercado pequeño que se llama “Pulpería” para probar meriendas de Costa Rica. Para el almuerzo, visitamos un restaurante al lado de una catarata el cual era una experiencia emocionante acompañado de comida rica. Ese mismo día nos quedamos en Cedrela por la tarde y aprendimos los pasos básicos de Merengue.
El siguiente día, empezamos temprano y caminamos por 40 minutos hacia Copey acompañados del carro de los miembros del staff de Cedrela. En esa actividad recogimos basura en el pueblo como botellas y envoltorios por dos horas, con bolsas de basura negras y guantes plásticos. En el camino de regreso, encontramos un pájaro al lado de la calle que había muerto y para honrar al pájaro, algunos de nosotros lo trajimos al cementerio para darle un entierro adecuado y le dimos flores que coleccionamos. En lo que queda del día nosotros comimos el almuerzo, la cena y tuvimos clases de español en Cedrela.
Al día siguiente, nos ofrecimos como voluntarios en cuatro fincas cafeteleras diferentes y las familias con las que trabajábamos nos asignaron varias tareas. Algunos trabajábamos cavando trincheras en las fincas cafeteleras y otros fertilizando los terrenos. Después hicimos voluntariado toda la mañana y almorzamos con nuestras familias, fuimos a la escuela secundaria en Copey para conocer a los niños e interactuar con ellos. Regresamos a Cedrela y terminamos la noche viendo la película Baby Driver como celebración de cumpleaños.
Nos dividimos en dos grupos e hicimos diferentes excursiones, la primera a una granja de quesos de Río Blanco y la otra a una granja de fresas. Probamos queso y fresas mientras aprendíamos sobre lo que se necesita para cosechar y crear diferentes productos.
Ahora, nos dirigimos a nuestra segunda mitad del viaje, cuyo comienzo está marcado por el cambio de ubicación de los alojamientos. Después de hacer voluntariado la mañana del día 22 de julio, llegamos a Cabinas Cecilias, un colorido montón de cabañas en la ciudad de Santa María. ¡Estamos emocionados de comenzar la siguiente parte del viaje aquí!
