Today, the Montañas y Mar Session A team went to Life Café de Monteverde, a coffee farm right here in Monteverde! At first glance, the farm appears to be a pretty typical one. Set near the tops of mountains, the farm proudly displays 42 acres of coffee trees along with various fruit and vegetable plants. In the right section of the farm, the goats, the chickens, and the pig Rosalia reside. However, what sets this coffee farm apart is its diligent effort towards making its farm sustainable. From the beginning of our six-hour stay there, we learned about the three pillars of sustainability, which are: social, economic, and environmental.
The students started the day off by asking the staff around the farm about how the farm works. Through this, they learned that the farm has a lot of volunteers that work there in return for food and lodging. A lot of their workers are also Nicaraguan and can give tours in English, Spanish, and French! With every tour, one dollar is given to the Monteverde Community fund. This way, the farm works towards being economically and socially sustainable.
Next, the students learned about how the farm is environmentally sustainable. Over the past three years, by creating their own natural pesticide, the farm has worked to reduce their use of pesticides by around 66%. The farm has also started to create its own fertilizer through the use of different types of animal manure, food waste, and organisms grown from the surrounding forest soil. The farm also works hard to keep their trees for 25 years instead of the usual 15 years.
In addition to learning about the farm, the students also had a coffee tasting, saw a Campana bird in the forest with a very distinct face and call, planted 30 coffee trees and a couple more fruit trees, learned about coffee roasting, and learned how to make tortillas.
Overall, the Montañas y Mar team had a blast seeing the beautiful farm and learning about the different ways farms can be more sustainable. The students found it truly inspiring how the farm strives to be as sustainable as it can be and to be respectful to the environment it inhabits.
Hoy, el equipo de Montañas y Mar fue a Life Café de Monteverde, ¡una finca de café aquí en Monteverde! Primeramente, la finca parece ser una muy común. La finca ofrece a los visitantes 42 acres de árboles de café, plantas de fruta y vegetales, y animales como cabras, pollos, y el cerro Rosalia. Sin embargo, la finca es muy especial en la manera en que es sostenible. En las seis horas que los estudiantes estuvieron allí, ellos aprendieron que las tres columnas de sostenible son: social, económica, y ambiental.
Primeramente, los estudiantes pidieron a las personas de la finca como la finca funciona. Gracias a esto, ellos aprendieron que la finca tiene muchos voluntarios que trabajan en la finca y se pagan en forma de alojamiento y comida. Muchos de los trabajadores son de Nicaragua entonces pueden dar excursiones en Español, Francés, e Inglés. Con cada excursión turística, la finca da un dólar al fondo comunal de Monteverde. De esta manera, la finca es sostenible en forma económica y social.
Además, los estudiantes aprendieron que la finca hace mucho para estar sostenible de manera ambiental. En los tres años pasados, la finca ha reducido su uso de pesticida en un 66% gracias a un pesticida natural que la finca crea. Además, la finca crea su propia fertilizante con estiércol de sus animales, desechos alimentarios, y organismos que se encuentran en la tierra del bosque. También, en la finca crecen sus árboles por 25 años en lugar del común 15 años.
Además de aprender sobre la finca, los estudiantes hicieron una degustación de café, vieron una campana (un tipo de pájaro con una cara y ruido muy raro), plantaron aproximadamente 40 árboles de café y fruta, aprendieron sobre el proceso de hacer el café, y aprendieron como hacer tortillas.
En total, el equipo se divirtió mucho viendo la finca bonita y aprendiendo como la finca es sostenible. Era muy inspiradora ver el trabajo que la finca hace para estar más sostenible y para tener respeto al bosque alrededor de la finca.
