Olas y Cerros: Bienvenidos a Parismina!
Week two in Costa Rica called for bug spray, sandals, and delicious snacks. Parismina is a small village, or “pueblo,” of about 400 people, located on the Caribbean coast.
We spent the last day in Turrialba with our local penpals, enjoying the Dia de la Anexión de Nicoya. In the afternoon, we learned how to make tortillas and chewed on local sugarcane sticks. After stepping off the ferries on Parismina’s dock the next day, we were greeted with open arms and scrumptious food by our host mothers. Everyone boasts about their host mother’s cooking, none of which compares to my host mother’s. AMIGOS volunteers live within a one-mile radius, so we’re still able to spend lots of time together.
La segunda semana en Costa Rica requirió insecticida, sandalias y deliciosos snacks. Parismina es un pequeño pueblo de unos 400 habitantes situado en la costa caribeña.
Pasamos el último día en Turrialba con nuestros amigos de correspondencia, disfrutando del Día de la Anexión de Nicoya. Por la tarde, aprendimos a hacer tortillas y masticamos palitos de caña de azúcar. Al día siguiente, cuando bajamos del ferry en el muelle de Parismina, nuestras madres nos recibieron con los brazos abiertos y una comida deliciosa. Todo el mundo presume de la cocina de sus madres de acogida, pero ninguna es comparable a la mía. Los voluntarios de AMIGOS viven en un radio de una milla, así que podemos pasar mucho tiempo juntos.
It’s very hot here, so we frequent the neighborhood hang-out spot, Doña Olga’s. Our favorite flavors of Doña Olga’s smoothies, on which we are spending all our college funds, include mango pineapple, choco banana, and lemon basil. We’ve explored all of the different pulperías and sampled their goods, such as chiky cookies (pronounced cheeky), fresa gummies, ranchitos (chips), and fresca (love of my life). Our exercise includes soccer, volleyball, and running!
There’s a yearly festival that celebrates the biggest sea turtle in the world, the leatherback. We celebrated by watching musicians, a clown, and dancing with our group. In Parismina, there are two types of sea turtles that nest on the beaches: leatherbacks (baulas) and green sea turtles (verdes). These turtles can lay around a hundred eggs, returning to the same beach every three years. Although the leatherback season had passed, we were lucky enough to see a hatching of green sea turtles. Later that night, we saw a turtle coming onto the beach to nest.
Aquí hace mucho calor, así que frecuentamos el lugar de reunión del barrio, Doña Olga’s. Nuestros sabores favoritos de los batidos de Doña Olga, en los que estamos gastando todos nuestros fondos universitarios…incluyen mango piña, choco plátano y limón albahaca. Hemos explorado todas las pulperías y probado sus productos, como las galletas chiky, las gominolas fresa, los ranchitos y la fresca. Nuestro ejercicio incluye fútbol, voleibol y correr.
Hay un festival anual que celebra la tortuga marina más grande del mundo, la tortuga baula. Lo celebramos viendo músicos, un payaso y bailando con nuestro grupo. En Parismina hay dos tipos de tortugas marinas que anidan en las playas: las baulas y las verdes. Estas tortugas pueden llegar a poner un centenar de huevos y vuelven a la misma playa cada tres años. Aunque la temporada de baulas había pasado, tuvimos la suerte de ver una eclosión de tortugas verdes. Más tarde, esa misma noche, vimos cómo una tortuga se acercaba a la playa para anidar.
We also created profound art out of the nearest convenient medium: sand. Our castles were graded on creativity, aesthetic appeal, and significance. Among the castles were two sea turtles, a tunnel, a dog, a world map, and an abstract city-like structure!
También creamos arte a partir del medio más cercano: la arena. Nuestros castillos se puntuaron en función de su creatividad, atractivo estético e importancia. Entre los castillos había dos tortugas marinas, un túnel, un perro, un mapamundi y una estructura abstracta en forma de ciudad!
