Olas y Cerros: Días de Voluntariado
Hola from week 2 of Olas y Cerros! We spent our last day in the mountains hiking an active volcano before heading to our host community in Parismina. There, our volunteers met their host families and got settled in. We volunteered by replanting coconut saplings closer to the beach, which will help regulate the temperature in turtle nests, playing a role in which gender the hatchlings will be. We also removed branches and tree trunks from the beach which could get in the way for turtles who come up on the beach at night. There was one notable experience where we tried to unearth an entire tree buried in the sand, which failed, but ultimately made us aware of our limitations and what is in our control…. We also got the opportunity to build a beach volleyball court, pick up trash around town, and paint light poles!
¡Hola desde la semana 2 de Olas y Cerros! Pasamos nuestro último día en las montañas haciendo senderismo en un volcán activo antes de dirigirnos a nuestra comunidad anfitriona en Parismina. Allí, nuestros voluntarios conocieron a sus familias anfitrionas y se establecieron. Nos ofrecimos como voluntarios para replantar plántulas de coco más cerca de la playa, lo cual ayudará a regular la temperatura en los nidos de tortugas, desempeñando un papel en el género de las crías al nacer. También retiramos ramas y troncos de árboles de la playa que podrían obstaculizar el paso de las tortugas que salen a la playa durante la noche. Hubo una experiencia destacada en la que intentamos desenterrar un árbol completo enterrado en la arena, lo cual fracasó..pero en última instancia nos hizo conscientes de nuestras limitaciones y de lo que está en nuestro control…También tuvimos la oportunidad de construir una cancha de vóley playa, recoger basura en el pueblo y pintar postes de luz!
We had a very eventful week in addition to volunteering. We explored the community and got to know some of the locals. We had like 50,000 smoothies from Olga’s, and Dolores’ Ice Creams were a hit as well. We had a lot of fun on the beach, and we played soccer with some of the kids from the community. We learned how to make some Costa Rican delicacies (the coconut was amazing, I’m not gonna lie!), and have had some informative talks with members of the community. Jerry brought the spice to his charla about environmental justice and Macko slayed with his charla about turtles. These made us more aware of Parismina and the world we live in, and the consequences of our actions as global citizens.
Además del voluntariado, pasamos una semana muy ocupada! Exploramos la comunidad y conocimos a algunos lugareños. Tomamos como 50.000 batidos de Olga’s, y los helados de Dolores también fueron un éxito. Nos divertimos mucho en la playa y jugamos fútbol con algunos niños de la comunidad. Aprendimos a preparar algunas delicias costarricenses (el coco estaba delicioso!) y tuvimos charlas informativas con miembros de la comunidad. Jerry presentó una charla sobre la justicia medioambiental y Macko también arrasó con su charla sobre las tortugas. Nos hicieron más conscientes de Parismina y del mundo en que vivimos, y de las consecuencias de nuestras acciones como ciudadanos globales.
And we haven’t even mentioned the wildlife yet! Just on our way to Parismina, we saw a sloth chilling in a tree. We’ve probably seen 800 macaws, and we learned about many different types of birds on our canal tour. Speaking of the canal tour, we saw so many cool things on our boats. We saw a family of monkeys, and we got jumpscared by a crocodile. Our turtle walks have also been a highlight. On our first night, we saw a Hawksbill turtle, the rarest type! It was a magical experience, and none of us are ever going to forget it.
Y aún no hemos hablado de la fauna! Justo de camino a Parismina, vimos un perezoso descansando en un árbol. Probablemente vimos 800 guacamayos, y aprendimos sobre muchos tipos diferentes de aves en nuestro recorrido por el canal. Hablando del recorrido por el canal, vimos muchas cosas increíbles en nuestros barcos. Vimos una familia de monos y hasta nos asustó un cocodrilo. Nuestros paseos en tortuga también han sido un “highlight.” La primera noche vimos una tortuga carey, ¡la especie más rara! Fue una experiencia mágica que ninguno de nosotros olvidará.
