Olas y Cerros: Good Vibes in Costa Rica!

 

We believe that the AMIGOS experience didn’t start the day we arrived at the airport, but the moment we decided to apply. However, the real adrenaline begins when the program starts…This is our second year as volunteers, and from our perspective, both years have been beautiful and unparalleled experiences. Olas y Cerros Session A is incredible. When we saw the rest of the participants arrive at the airport, the energy they brought with them was amazing, and it has stayed with us throughout the trip. 

Nosotros creemos que la experiencia de AMIGOS no empezó el día que llegamos al aeropuerto, si no desde el momento en el que decidimos realizar nuestra aplicación; no obstante la verdadera adrenalina empieza cuando inicia el programa…Este es el segundo año que somos voluntarios, y desde nuestra perspectiva ambos años han sido experiencias hermosas e inigualables. Olas y Cerros sesión A esta siento increíble. Cuando los vimos llegar al aeropuerto las vibras que traían con ellos eran increíbles y así se ha quedado lo que llevamos del viaje. 

 

Our first day started with a typical Costa Rican dish called “gallo pinto,” and then we had the opportunity to interact a lot on the bus. When we arrived at Guayabo Lodge, the bus couldn’t enter the hotel area, so we had to carry our suitcases for about 300 meters until we reached the hotel. Once we arrived, we were assigned our rooms and roommates. We then participated in ice-breaking activities and proceeded with the briefing. We had a break, during which we went to play in the gardens of our beautiful hotel, and we were embraced by a beautiful rainbow during a lovely sunset (the evidence of this beautiful day is on Instagram!).

Nuestro primer día empezó con un plato típico costarricense llamado “gallo pinto”, y luego tuvimos la oportunidad de interactuar mucho en el autobús. Cuando llegamos a Guayabo Lodge, el autobús no podía entrar en la zona del hotel, así que tuvimos que cargar nuestras maletas unos 300 metros hasta llegar al hotel. Al llegar, nos asignaron nuestras habitaciones y compañeros de cuarto. Luego, participamos en actividades “ice-breakers” y procedimos a la sesión informativa. Tuvimos un descanso, y fuimos a jugar a los jardines de nuestro lindo hotel. Nos abrazó un precioso arco iris durante el atardecer (¡las pruebas de este mágico día están en Instagram!).

 

On our second day at Guayabo Lodge, we took a beautiful hike along trails to a nearby river close to our hotel. Afterward, we continued with the briefing. In the afternoon, we had free time, during which we played soccer before our first Spanish class. In the Spanish class, we introduced ourselves to the teachers, and they introduced themselves to us. We also learned about being global citizens, and the participants were able to practice their Spanish while we, the national participants, practiced our English. It was a lovely experience. 

En nuestro segundo día en Guayabo Lodge, hicimos una hermosa caminata por senderos hasta un río cercano a nuestro hotel. Después, continuamos con la sesión informativa. Por la tarde, tuvimos tiempo libre, entonces jugamos fútbol antes de nuestra primera clase de español. En la clase de español, conocimos a nuestros profesores. También aprendimos a ser ciudadanos del mundo, y los participantes pudieron practicar su español mientras nosotros, los participantes nacionales, practicábamos nuestro inglés. Fue una experiencia muy linda!

 

The third day was incredibly beautiful. We woke up to a stunning sunrise with a view of the beautiful landscapes of Turrialba. After a delicious breakfast, we went to Turrialba center to volunteer with local school students and some UNIDOS organization members. Around 11:30, we returned to the hotel to enjoy a delicious lunch. Then, we went to RETUS with Doña Miriam at her house, where she had her beautiful project called COMFISGAOS (She named her project that way in memory of her mother, who used that word a lot. The word can be closely translated to “tenacious”. To be comfisgado means to be determined, smart, and to not give up.) With her, we learned and enjoyed preparing delicious tortillas with cheese, following the step-by-step process and using the respective ingredients. We ate the delicious tortillas we made with Doña Miriam’s assistance, and they were fantastic. The other participants loved them too. They also offered us coffee and aguadulce (sweet water traditional to this place), which many participants had never tasted before, and they ended up loving it. Now, whenever we’re offered aguadulce in any place, everyone ends up delighted. After RETUS, we returned to the hotel for the second Spanish class. The Spanish classes were very fun, and we learned a lot.

Well, there were many activities in the following days as well. We had a chocolate tour, worked with traditional cheese, got to know animals like goats, and hiked the Turrialba Volcano trail. We can’t write about everything, but it was an amazing week. Now, we’re heading to the Caribbean to live with host families!

El tercer día fue increíblemente hermoso. Nos despertamos con un impresionante amanecer con vistas a los hermosos paisajes de Turrialba. Después de un delicioso desayuno, nos dirigimos al centro de Turrialba para trabajar como voluntarios con los estudiantes de la escuela local y algunos miembros de la organización UNIDOS. Alrededor de las 11:30, regresamos al hotel para disfrutar de un delicioso almuerzo. Luego, fuimos a RETUS con Doña Miriam en su casa, donde ella tenía su hermoso proyecto llamado COMFISGAOS (Ella llamó así a su proyecto en memoria de su madre, quien usaba mucho esa palabra. La palabra se puede traducir literalmente como “tenaz”. Ser comfisgado significa ser decidido, inteligente y no rendirse). Con ella, aprendimos y disfrutamos preparando deliciosas tortillas con queso, siguiendo el proceso paso a paso y utilizando los ingredientes respectivos. Comimos las deliciosas tortillas que hicimos con la ayuda de Doña Miriam, y estaban fantásticas. A los demás participantes también les encantaron. También nos ofrecieron café y aguadulce (agua dulce tradicional de este lugar), que muchos participantes no habían probado nunca, y acabó encantándoles. Ahora, cada vez que nos ofrecen aguadulce en cualquier lugar, todo el mundo acaba encantado. Después de RETUS, volvimos al hotel para la segunda clase de español. Las clases de español fueron muy divertidas y aprendimos mucho.

Los días siguientes también hubo muchas actividades. Hicimos un tour de chocolate, trabajamos con queso tradicional, conocimos animales como cabras, y caminamos por el sendero del Volcán Turrialba. No podemos escribir sobre todo, pero fue una semana increíble. Ahora, ¡nos vamos al Caribe a vivir con familias anfitrionas!
