La Pezeta 2023: Meet OUR team!

Welcome to the La Pezeta Project 2023, we are so excited to have you here! My name is Karol Zúñiga, and I have the pleasure of being this year’s Project Director for the La Pezeta project. I’m thrilled to introduce you to the AMIGOS staff team – this incredible group of empowered women, lovers of nature, who are passionate about empowering youth! Learn more about us:

 

Karol Andrea Zúñiga Rojas, Project Director

My name is Karol Andrea Zúñiga Rojas, I’m Tica (Costa Rican), a nature lover, and with my husband we are building our own utopia. I have known about AMIGOS for more than 10 years, I have had the opportunity to participate closely in different AMIGOS programs and activities as a volunteer, host family, coordinator, and director of Camps in National Parks by the Partner Agency in Costa Rica Casa de la Juventud. In 2016, I participated in a pilot plan sending Costa Rican AMIGOS volunteer to Nicaragua. For different reasons the opportunity to work directly with AMIGOS did not materialize until this year, for which, I’m extremely grateful.

I live in Perez Zeledon, in the middle of the mountains in the south of Costa Rica. I studied Ecological Tourism and Sustainable Tourism Business Management at the National University of Costa Rica, however I have tried to develop as much learning as possible in both formal and non-formal education, in terms of soft skills and leadership. At my university, I was in charge of the network of health promotion, leadership and sexuality for 3 years, and I also participated very closely in the Student Association as well as different leadership projects. In 2019, I had the opportunity to work in a consultancy for UNESCO hand-in-hand with the National Museum of Costa Rica for 3 years – in a project to engage young people from local communities and indigenous peoples in the south of the country. I will be the Director of the La Pezeta Project, so I am very excited and hope that the experiences gained will be of benefit to the project and the participants!

 

Mi nombre es Karol Andrea Zuñiga Rojas, soy Tica, una amante de la naturaleza y junto con mi esposo construimos nuestra propia utopía. Conozco AMIGOS desde hace mas de 10 años, he tenido la oportunidad de participar muy de cerca en los diferentes programas y  actividades de AMIGOS como voluntaria, familia anfitriona, coordinadora y directora de Campamentos en Parques Nacionales por parte de la Agencia Colaboradora en Costa Rica, Casa de la Juventud. En el año 2016 participé en un plan piloto enviando Costarricenses voluntarios de AMIGOS a Nicaragua. Por diferentes razones, la oportunidad de trabajar directamente con AMIGOS no se había concretado – hasta este año, por lo que estoy sumamente agradecida.

Vivo en Pérez Zeledón, en medio de montañas al Sur de Costa Rica. Estudié Turismo Ecológico y Gestión Empresarial de Turismo Sostenible en la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, sin embargo he tratado de desarrollar todo el aprendizaje posible tanto en la educación formal y como en la educación no formal, en lo que abarcan las habilidades blandas y de liderazgo. En la Universidad estuve a cargo de la red de promoción de la salud, liderazgo y sexualidad por 3 años, también participé muy de cerca en la Asociación  Estudiantil y en diferentes proyectos de Liderazgo. En el año 2019 tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en una Consultoría para UNESCO de la mano con el Museo Nacional de Costa  Rica por 3 años, en un proyecto para involucrar a los jóvenes de las comunidades locales y  los pueblos indígenas, al Sur del país. Seré la Directora del Proyecto La Pezeta, por lo que estoy sumamente emocionada y espero que las experiencias adquiridas sean de provecho  para el proyecto y los participantes!

 

Michelle Jasmin Cuesta, Associate Project Director

Hello everyone, my name is Michelle Jasmin Cuesta and I am the Associate Project Director for the La Pezeta Project. A little background on me, I was born in New Jersey, but in 2003 I relocated to Miami, Florida where I currently live. I went to school for Communications Arts for my undergrad and later attended school in Southern Spain for Social Development in Art History. For a long time, I have been passionate about working with children and culturally enriching experiences. In 2013, I volunteered in Foundation Mir in La Romana, Dominican Republic ,where I worked with underprivileged children. This cemented my love for children and my enjoyment of being abroad. In 2016, I moved to Andalucía, Spain to fulfill a role as a North American Cultural Ambassador and Language Assistant where I had the opportunity work, live and later attend University. Spain was a beautiful experience that marked me in more ways than one.

During my time in Spain, I lived in 3 cities, one coastal town, and was able to experience diverse parts of the country. Upon my return to the US in 2019, I have mostly worked in education and social services. My work in education has mainly revolved around math interventions and as a temporary instructor. While my work in social services has been with the unaccompanied minors that cross the US border to reunite with family and distant relatives in the US, I was in charge of assisting with the initial process of reunification and evaluations. I later began to work in Post Release Services, where I would closely work with families and the children that have been released into their care. This summer will be my first time working with AMIGOS and I’m looking forward to a beautiful and productive project!

 

Hola a todos, mi nombre es Michelle Jasmin Cuesta y soy la Directora Asociada del Proyecto La Pezeta. Nací en el estado de Nueva Jersey y luego en 2003 me mudé a Miami, Florida donde actualmente vivo. Estudié Comunicación y más adelante estudié  Desarrollo Social en Cultura Artística en el sur de España. Desde hace mucho tiempo me apasiona trabajar con niños y vivir experiencias culturalmente enriquecedoras. En el 2013 tuve la oportunidad de ir a la Fundación Mir en La Romana, República Dominicana, para trabajar de voluntaria con niños de bajo recurso. Fue una experiencia hermosa, la cual consolidó mi amor por los niños y mi disfrute de estar en el extranjero. En 2016, me mudé a  Andalucía, España para cumplir el puesto de Embajadora Cultural de Norte America y Asistente de Idiomas donde tuve la oportunidad de trabajar, vivir y luego asistir a la  Universidad. España fue una experiencia inolvidable, la cual me marcó en una multitud de  maneras.

Durante mi tiempo en España viví en 3 ciudades, un pueblo costero y pude experimentar diversas partes del país. Al regresar a los EE. UU. en 2019, he trabajado principalmente en educación y servicios sociales. Mi trabajo en educación ha girado principalmente en torno a intervenciones matemáticas y como instructora temporal. Mientras que mi trabajo en servicios sociales ha sido con los menores no acompañados que cruzan la frontera de los EE. UU. para reunirse con familiares y parientes lejanos en  los EE. UU – mi labor ha sido ayudar a los familiares de los menores con el proceso inicial  de reunificación y evaluaciones. Más adelante, comencé a trabajar en los Servicios  posteriores, donde trabajaría de cerca con las familias y los niños que han sido liberados a su cuidado. Este verano será la primera vez que trabaje con AMIGOS y creo que va ser un verano espectacular y productivo!

 

Reina Watanabe, Project Supervisor

My name is Reina Watanabe and I will be serving as a project supervisor on the La Pezeta program this summer. I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I am currently a junior at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where I study environmental science and Spanish. This will be my first time on project staff for AMIGOS, and I am so excited to grow as a cross cultural mentor for US and Latin American youth and improve my Spanish skills in a professional setting!

My AMIGOS journey began in 2019 when I served as a summer volunteer in Barahona, Dominican Republic. Upon returning from my trip, I also served as an AMIGOS trainer for future participants in the Houston chapter. Since my AMIGOS experience, I have been passionate  about Latin American and environmental studies and have completed a semester study abroad during the spring of 2022 in Montevideo, Uruguay with a focus on agrifood systems and Spanish immersion. I am passionate about sustainable agriculture as well and have worked as a farm intern on an urban farm in Houston, TX and a community farm in Montevideo, Uruguay. My most recent experience working with youth was serving as a camp counselor last summer in Vermont as the nature and gardening program leader. I look forward to meeting and serving on project staff with you all this summer!  

 

Me llamo Reina Watanabe y este verano trabajaré como supervisora de proyecto en el programa La Pezeta. Nací y crecí en Houston, TX. Actualmente soy estudiante de tercer año en la Universidad de Arkansas en Fayetteville, donde estudio ciencias medioambientales y español. Esta será mi primera vez en el personal del proyecto para AMIGOS, y estoy tan emocionada de crecer como mentora intercultural para jóvenes estadounidenses y latinoamericanos y mejorar mis habilidades de español en un entorno profesional.

Mi viaje en AMIGOS comenzó en 2019 cuando serví como voluntaria de verano en Barahona, República Dominicana. Al regresar de mi viaje, también serví como entrenadora de AMIGOS para futuros participantes en la red de AMIGOS en Houston. Desde mi experiencia en AMIGOS, me han apasionado los estudios latinoamericanos y ambientales, y he completado un semestre de estudios en el extranjero durante la primavera de 2022 en Montevideo, Uruguay, con un enfoque en sistemas agroalimentarios e inmersión en español. También me apasiona la agricultura sostenible y he trabajado como pasante en una granja urbana en Houston, TX y en una granja comunitaria en Montevideo, Uruguay. Mi experiencia más reciente trabajando con jóvenes fue como consejera de un campamento el verano pasado en Vermont, como líder del programa de naturaleza y jardinería. Ya quiero conocerlos a todos y formar parte de este gran proyecto!

 

Valery Villalobos, Project Supervisor

My name is Valery Villalobos and I am the Project Supervisor for the La Pezeta Project. I live in Northern New Jersey, just 5 minutes away from New York City. My hometown and I are separated by the Hudson River. I studied Exercise Science during my time in college and I first heard about AMIGOS in 2019 from a college mentor. This is my first time being a part of AMIGOS and I am very excited!

My passion for supporting youth leaders came from being a youth leader myself. The incredible mentors I met, fellow youth leaders I lead with,, and my family played a part in who I am today. I am 1 of 9 children (5 boys and 4 girls), and I am extremely nurturing. I aspire to become a doctor of Chiropractic and will be starting school in January of 2024. I am passionate for health, exercise, and passionate about helping others. I aim to help you all during my time as a Project Supervisor!

Me llamo Valery Villalobos y soy la supervisora del proyecto La Pezeta. Vivo en el norte de Nueva Jersey, a sólo 5 minutos de Nueva York. Mi ciudad natal y yo estamos separadas por el río Hudson! Estudié Ciencias del Ejercicio durante mi tiempo en la universidad y escuché por primera vez sobre AMIGOS en 2019 de un mentor de la universidad. Esta es mi primera vez siendo parte de AMIGOS y ¡estoy muy emocionada!

Mi pasión por apoyar a los líderes juveniles vino de ser una líder juvenil yo misma. Los increíbles mentores que conocí, los compañeros líderes juveniles con los que lidero y mi familia jugaron un papel en lo que soy hoy. Soy una de 9 hermanos (5 chicos y 4 chicas), y siento mucha empatía hacia las personas. Aspiro a convertirme en doctora en Quiropráctica y comenzaré a estudiar en enero de 2024. Me apasiona la salud, el ejercicio, y me apasiona ayudar a los demás. Mi objetivo es ayudar a todos durante mi tiempo como Supervisor de Proyectos!
