Santa Elena: Days With Our Families
Hello, Our names are Xander and Callum and for the last three weeks we have been staying with host families in a small community outside of Santa Elena, Ecuador. Over these three weeks we have restored and painted a community building and held activities with the kids from the community each week Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. During the camps, we draw and play games.
Our day starts at some time between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., when we eat a traditional Ecuadorian breakfast usually consisting of plátano de maduro (plantain), eggs and cafe. After breakfast, we work on the community project, which for the most part has been painting the inside of the communal space in the community. After painting, we return back to our homes and are welcomed with some encebollado (a type of soup) and some form of meat, rice and plantain.
After finishing our lunch, we meet with the community youth when they are released from school and have completed their homework. Then we lead many fun, yet educational activities ranging from active games to drawings where kids can express their creativity while socializing with other youth from the community. After camp, we typically go to the park or the soccer pitch to spend time with the kids of the community. Normally, we play soccer, Uno, rag or simply walk around taking in the beautiful culture and nature in our community.
Our day then finishes with dinner around 6 p.m and spending time with our host families; playing cards, watching an Ecuador soccer match, or just talking. Our assimilation into the Ecuadorian culture deepens during these fun activities.
Hola, Nuestros nombres son Xander y Callum y durante las últimas tres semanas hemos estado alojados con familias anfitrionas en una pequeña comunidad a las afueras de Santa Elena, Ecuador. Durante estas tres semanas hemos restaurado y pintado un edificio de la comunidad y hemos realizado actividades con los niños de la comunidad cada semana de lunes a viernes de 3PM a 5PM. Durante los campamentos, dibujamos y jugamos.
Nuestro día empieza en algún momento entre las 8 y las 9 de la mañana, cuando tomamos un desayuno tradicional ecuatoriano que suele consistir en plátano maduro, huevos y café. Después del desayuno, trabajamos en el proyecto comunitario, que en su mayor parte ha consistido en pintar el interior del espacio común de la comunidad. Después de pintar, volvemos a nuestras casas y nos reciben con un poco de encebollado y algún tipo de carne, arroz y plátano.
Después de terminar nuestro almuerzo, nos reunimos con los jóvenes de la comunidad cuando salen de la escuela y han terminado sus deberes. Entonces dirigimos muchas actividades divertidas, pero educativas, que van desde juegos activos hasta dibujos en los que los niños pueden expresar su creatividad mientras socializan con otros jóvenes de la comunidad. Después del campamento, solemos ir al parque o al campo de fútbol para pasar tiempo con los niños de la comunidad. Normalmente, jugamos al fútbol, Uno, trapo o simplemente paseamos disfrutando de la hermosa cultura y naturaleza de nuestra comunidad.
Nuestro día termina con la cena alrededor de las 6 p.m. y pasando tiempo con nuestras familias anfitrionas; jugando cartas, viendo un partido de fútbol de Ecuador, o simplemente hablando. Nuestra asimilación de la cultura ecuatoriana se profundiza durante estas divertidas actividades.
Noche de Bingo – Bingo Night
Our community also had a bingo night which was good. The night of bingo was conducted in a thorough, yet organized manner, where the cacophony was scarce, but the experience captivating, as if in a meticulous pattern, the indicative numbers were called. We played bingo and raised money for the community by selling bingo cards for $1.
During the bingo night, we played alongside local community members, trying to get a bingo. We also handed over prizes like rice, oatmeal, and orange juice. This was overall a fun experience, which showed us the type of activities people like to do in our community. The money we raised went to roofing tiles, which are being used in the communal building.
Nuestra comunidad también celebró una noche de bingo que estuvo chévere. La noche de bingo se llevó a cabo de una manera minuciosa, pero organizada, donde la cacofonía era escasa, pero la experiencia cautivadora, como si en un patrón meticuloso, los números indicativos fueron llamados. Jugábamos al bingo y recaudábamos dinero para la comunidad vendiendo cartones de bingo a 1 dólar.
Durante la noche de bingo, jugamos junto a los miembros de la comunidad local, intentando conseguir un bingo. También repartimos premios como arroz, avena y zumo de naranja. En general fue una experiencia divertida, que nos mostró el tipo de actividades que a la gente le gusta hacer en nuestra comunidad. El dinero que recaudamos se destinó a tejas, que se están utilizando en el edificio comunal.
Host Family Highlight
One host family highlight that I had was last Saturday. After a day of fun, I came back to a busy house, preparing to celebrate three birthday’s that had occurred in the past two weeks. Mine, Yesley (my host sister), and Yaseis (my host brother). There was a big cake, marshmallows, chips and food cooking on the stovetop. Once Xander’s family showed up, we took turns singing ‘Happy Birthday’ in English and Spanish. After a traditional birthday celebration, we enjoyed chicken, rice and noodles. Then finished the night off with cake and jello. This night was a highlight because it made me feel like I had really connected with the family, especially since they included me in their celebration. – Callum
El sábado pasado viví uno de mis mejores momentos con la familia anfitriona. Después de un día de diversión, volví a una casa con mucho ruido, preparándose para celebrar tres cumpleaños que habían tenido lugar en las últimas dos semanas. El mío, el de Yesley (mi hermana de acogida) y el de Yaseis (mi hermano de acogida). Había una gran torta, malvaviscos, patatas fritas y comida cocinándose en los fogones. Cuando llegó la familia de Xander, nos turnamos para cantar el “cumpleaños feliz” en inglés y en español. Después de la tradicional celebración de cumpleaños, disfrutamos de pollo, arroz y fideos. Luego terminamos la noche con torta y gelatina. Esta noche fue un momento bonito porque me hizo sentir que realmente había conectado con mi familia, sobre todo porque me incluyeron en su celebración. – Callum
A specific highlight with my host family was the ludicrous game of UNO we played. A bright array of magnificent prizes were available for the taking. Throughout the process, the cards were meticulously placed in a central location, indicating the specified color one would want the game to progress as. As the game continued, everyone’s thirst for prizes deepened with Twinkies and sea salt chips on the line. Overall a really fun experience that helped me connect with my host family. I won two games in a row, earning a twinkie and then Pop rocks! – Xander
Uno de los momentos bonitos con mi familia de acogida fue la divertida partida de UNO que jugamos. Había una gran variedad de magníficos premios. A lo largo del proceso, las cartas se colocaban meticulosamente en un lugar central, indicando el color específico con el que uno quería que progresara la partida. A medida que avanzaba el juego, aumentaba la sed de premios de todos, con Twinkies y patatas fritas con sal marina en juego. En general, fue una experiencia muy divertida que me ayudó a conectar con mi familia de acogida. Gané dos partidas seguidas y me llevé un Twinkie y unas Pop Rocks! – Xander
