Santa Elena: Inolvidable…

An experience that not only touched our hearts, but also created a new found appreciation for Ecuadorian culture during our visit to this city. We were culturally immersed, participating in traditional Ecuadorian dances and even exchanging a popular dance from the United States known as “the cotton-eyed joe”.
Upon arrival, we were given the task of beautifying the house of Plan. We began cleaning the inside of the abandoned house and found a variety of toys that must have been untouched for years as they were full of dirt and grime. We did our best to clean the toys, but they were left with stains so we tried our best to hide them from the children to keep them from crying of disgust. On the very first day of teaching the kids, they found the toys we had hidden. Instead of screaming and crying, they danced around with the toys and even wanted to take them home. In shock, the three of us watched the children laughing and playing with the toys we tried to keep from them.
Una experiencia que no sólo tocó nuestros corazones, sino que también creó una nueva apreciación de la cultura ecuatoriana durante nuestra visita a la ciudad. Durante nuestra estancia, nos sumergimos en la cultura, participamos en bailes tradicionales ecuatorianos e incluso intercambiamos un baile popular de Estados Unidos conocido como “the cotton-eyed joe”.
Al llegar a la ciudad, nos dieron la tarea de embellecer las casas de Plan. Empezamos limpiando el interior de la casa abandonada y encontramos una gran variedad de juguetes que debían llevar años sin tocarse, ya que estaban llenos de suciedad y mugre. Hicimos todo lo posible por limpiar los juguetes, pero quedaron manchados, así que hicimos todo lo posible por ocultárselos a los niños para que no lloraran de asco. El primer día de clase, los niños encontraron los juguetes que habíamos escondido. En lugar de gritar y llorar, bailaron con los juguetes e incluso quisieron llevárselos a casa. Asombrados, los tres vimos cómo los niños jugaban con los juguetes que habíamos intentado ocultarles.
The kids continued to surprise us as they constantly went outside of their comfort zone to ask us questions in English and had a desire to learn more about the language.Their energy was contagious and provoked a desire within ourselves to become more knowledgeable about the language and culture of Ecuador.
As each day passed, more and more community members wanted to get involved in beautifying the area, we were overwhelmed by the amount of support the community wanted to give; our host moms even made food for us to eat while we worked. It was incredible watching youth getting involved in their community, some were as young as eight years old, helping us break down dirt piles and move rocks. We had never seen such a united community, between the kind lady who would bring us snacks, and the youth in the community that designed the mural.
Nearing the end of the trip, we had a final celebration with friends and family where we were gifted a collage that captured every moment here and it truly expressed the value of family. It was hard to say
goodbye to a community we fell in love with, but we have memories to last a lifetime.
Los niños siguieron sorprendiéndonos, ya que salían constantemente de su zona de confort para hacernos preguntas en inglés y tenían ganas de aprender más sobre el idioma. Su energía era contagiosa y provocó en nosotros el deseo de conocer mejor el idioma y la cultura de Ecuador.
A medida que pasaban los días, más y más miembros de la comunidad querían participar en el embellecimiento de la zona, nos sentimos abrumados por la cantidad de apoyo que la comunidad quería dar; nuestras madres anfitrionas incluso hicieron comida para que comiéramos mientras trabajábamos. Fue increíble ver cómo los jóvenes se involucraban en su comunidad, algunos de tan solo ocho años, ayudándonos a romper montones de tierra y a mover piedras. Nunca habíamos visto una comunidad tan unida, entre la amable señora que nos traía la merienda y los jóvenes de la comunidad que diseñaron el mural.
Casi al final del viaje, tuvimos una celebración final con amigos y familiares donde nos regalaron un collage que capturaba cada momento aca y que realmente expresaba el valor de la familia. Fue duro despedirnos de una comunidad de la que nos enamoramos, pero tenemos recuerdos para toda la vida.
In a community full of wonderful people, we had the honor of living with the most inviting and lively families. These families showed us a variety of new experiences, but most importantly they showed us a new definition of family. They showed us that family exists beyond blood, race, and cultural differences. Though we were complete strangers to these people, they did not for a moment treat us as such; they welcomed us with open arms and warm smiles. Our differences were not criticized but celebrated and we feel honored to have had the opportunity of knowing the angels that walk these streets.
En una comunidad llena de gente maravillosa, tuvimos el honor de vivir con las familias más acogedoras y animadas. Estas familias nos mostraron una variedad de nuevas experiencias, pero lo más importante es que nos mostraron una nueva definición de familia. Nos mostraron que la familia existe más allá de la sangre, la raza y las diferencias culturales. Aunque éramos unos completos desconocidos para estas personas, ni por un momento nos trataron como tales; nos recibieron con los brazos abiertos y cálidas sonrisas. Nuestras diferencias no fueron criticadas, sino celebradas, y nos sentimos honrados de haber tenido la oportunidad de conocer a los ángeles que caminan por estas calles.
