Santa Elena: Mi Comunidad

Hi everyone! I’m Aimery, a 2023 Santa Elena AMIGOS volunteer. For the past 4 weeks I’ve been passing my time in Ecuador and mostly living in a small, lovely community with my more than amazing community partner Christopher. Everyone here is incredible and kind, I’ve quickly been able to make many friends both with the kids from the community, and with adults and the siblings from my host family, and from Christopher’s host family. Christopher is actually from Ecuador and doesn’t speak English just like the rest of the people in the community, so I’ve been needing to communicate to everyone in Spanish but honestly, it’s been a lot easier than I thought before I flew out here to Ecuador. My Spanish has served me a lot and I’ve been able to have conversations super easily, opposite to what I previously thought. I’m really grateful for Christopher being my community partner because he’s really fun to hang around, he’s super athletic like me and we’ve grown a lot closer over the last few weeks.
¡Hola a todos! Soy Aimery, un voluntario de AMIGOS Santa Elena 2023. Durante las últimas 4 semanas he estado pasando mi tiempo en Ecuador y principalmente viviendo en una pequeña y encantadora comunidad con mi más que increíble compañero de comunidad Christopher. Todos aquí son increíbles y amables, rápidamente he podido hacer muchos amigos tanto con los niños de la comunidad, como con los adultos y los hermanos de mi familia anfitriona, y de la familia anfitriona de Christopher. Christopher es en realidad de Ecuador y no habla Inglés al igual que el resto de la gente en la comunidad, así que he tenido que comunicarme con todo el mundo en español, pero honestamente, ha sido mucho más fácil de lo que pensaba antes de volar aquí a Ecuador. Mi español me ha servido mucho y he podido tener conversaciones fácilmente, contrario a lo que pensaba antes. Estoy muy agradecido de que Christopher sea mi compañero de comunidad porque es muy divertido estar con él, es súper atlético como yo y nos hemos vuelto buenos amigos en las últimas semanas.
The kids have a large amount of energy during the extracurriculars and sometimes have been difficult to keep under control, but being around them made me feel appreciated because I’m from a different country and I’m an older person, but still a kid so they still have the chance to play with me. They loved asking me questions about myself and always wanted to go play fútbol with me, which made me feel so loved and special. I’ve become good friends with a few of the older kids from the community and hanging out with them was very relatable to hanging out with my friends back home. Many of them say hi to me during the day when they see me around and some of them give me hugs too, it’s just a great relationship I’ve built in so little time with the kids of the community.
Los niños tienen una gran cantidad de energía durante las extraescolares y a veces ha sido difícil mantenerlos bajo control, pero estar cerca de ellos me hizo sentir apreciado porque soy de un país diferente y soy una persona mayor, pero sigo siendo un niño, así que todavía tienen la oportunidad de jugar conmigo. Les encantaba hacerme preguntas sobre mí y siempre querían ir a jugar fútbol, lo que me hacía sentir muy querido y especial. Me he hecho muy amigo de algunos de los chicos más mayores de la comunidad y salir con ellos es muy parecido a salir con mis amigos de casa. Muchos de ellos me saludan durante el día cuando me ven y algunos me dan abrazos también, es una gran relación que he construido en tan poco tiempo con los niños de la comunidad!
Christopher
Soy Christopher Cruz, participante de Amigos de las Américas. Les contare un poco sobre mi experiencia trabajando como voluntario en una bella comunidad llamada Buena Fuente y como pase bonitos momentos con mi compañero Aimery. El clima y los días eran días de un calor tan fuerte que quitaba mucha energía. La primera semana conocimos a nuestra familia anfitriona, y poco a poco nos adaptamos a nuestro entorno nuevo. Descubrimos donde impartiríamos las clases (La Casita Plan), la cual se nos fue enseñada de sorpresa, ya que al inicio no nos dejaron conocer la casita para que fuera una sorpresa conocer a los niños de la comunidad. También, les contaré sobre sobre mi familia anfitriona, los cuales fueron super amables conmigo. En Buena Fuente las personas son super amables y los niños tienen mucha energía y también son muy creativos. Cuando comenzamos con los talleres, fue un poco difícil ya que tenía miedo de cómo serían las cosas pero con el tiempo me acostumbré a la enseñanza, ya que fue mi primera vez trabajando con niños. Esta fue una experiencia única que me gustaría volver a experimentar!
I am Christopher Cruz, a participant of Amigos de las Americas. I will tell you a little about my experience working as a volunteer in a beautiful community called Buena Fuente and how I spent beautiful moments with my partner Aimery. The weather and the days here were so hot that it took away a lot of energy. The first week we met our host family, and little by little we adapted to our new environment. We found out where we would be teaching (La Casita Plan), which was shown to us as a surprise, since at the beginning we were not allowed to visit the casita so that it would be a surprise to meet the children of the community. Also, I will tell you about my host family, who were super nice to me. In Buena Fuente the people are super nice and the children have a lot of energy and are also very creative. When we started with the workshops, it was a bit difficult as I was afraid of how things would be but with time I got used to the teaching, as it was my first time working with children. This was a unique experience that I would like to experience again!
Mis actividades del día a día, eran actividades en las que podía compartir tiempo de calidad con mi compañero. Empezábamos el día trotando, y de paso, conocíamos un poco más de la comunidad en la que estábamos vivendo. Saludábamos a la gente que veíamos mientras corríamos, y conversábamos sobre como realizar los talleres que se desarrollarían en las tardes en Casita Plan.
Al terminar de correr, realizábamos un calentamiento que me dejaba muy agotado, y luego desayunábamos y nos reuníamos en Casita Plan para limpiarla y planear el cronograma del día. Aimery, quien fue mi compañero en esta experiencia, era super genial, el no era de Ecuador pero su español es super bueno, también es muy deportista y atleta; y con él corría en las mañanas y jugaba en las tardes después de los talleres. Jugábamos fútbol con los niños de la comunidad, aunque había días que yo solo miraba, y otros donde yo me unía a jugar.
My day-to-day activities were activities in which I could share quality time with my partner. We would start the day by jogging, and in the process, we would get to know a little more about the community in which we were living. We would greet the people we saw as we ran, and we would talk about the workshops that would take place in the afternoons at Casita Plan.
After we finished running, we would warm up, which left me very exhausted, and then we would have breakfast and meet at Casita Plan to clean up and plan the day’s schedule. Aimery, who was my partner in this experience, was super cool, he was not from Ecuador but his Spanish is super good, he is also very sporty and athletic; and with him I would run in the mornings and play in the afternoons after the workshops. We played soccer with the kids in the community, although there were days when I just watched, and others when I joined in.
Los niños son un amor, siempre llenos de energía y muy creativos al realizar trabajos manuales. El momento que más voy a amar fue la despedida. Tan solo recordarlo me llena de tristeza, que se me hace pequeño el corazón…Cuando nos tocó irnos de la comunidad y llegó el bus a recogernos, las voluntarias pidieron permiso a los docentes de la institución donde estudiaban los niños para poder salir a despedirse de nosotros.
Ese momento me llenó de mucha tristeza ya que los niños nos abrazaban y lloraban por nuestra despedida, nos pedían quedarnos y nos agarraban para no irnos. Es lo que siempre recordaré de corazón, que nos dieran la oportunidad de despedirnos con todos los niños que veíamos en las clases. Siempre recordaré a los niños por el arte que expresan de muchas formas.
The children are lovely, always full of energy and very creative when making crafts. The moment I will love the most was the farewell. When it was our turn to leave the community and the bus arrived to pick us up, the volunteers asked the teachers for permission for the children to leave to say farewell.
That moment filled me with sadness because the children hugged us and cried for our farewell, they asked us to stay and held us so we would not leave. That is what I will always remember with all my heart, that we were given the opportunity to say goodbye with all the children we saw in the classes. I will always remember the children for the art they express in so many ways.
