Yo soy de Costa Rica, y la zona de Pérez Zeledón es bien conocida por su café y por supuesto no puede faltar nuestro orgullo nacional KEYLOR NAVAS, el famoso portero del equipo de futbol del Real Madrid y que salió de un pueblito de Pérez. Lo que yo realmente nunca me imaginé y debo decir que no he visto en ningún otra parte de Costa Rica es una red de jóvenes tan fuerte como la que tienen nuestros socios de proyecto CASA, se nota el esfuerzo, crear un compromiso como el que los jóvenes de Pérez tienen con el proyecto de AMIGOS no se crea de la noche a la mañana.

Desde el momento que me presentaron la organización CASA de la Juventud quede maravillada, con cada una de las cosas que iban diciendo su historia como se formó con fuerte trabajo, como ellos mismos hicieron cada uno de los bloques que sostiene estas paredes y me pregunte como han hecho que los chicos sigan tan motivado por tanto tiempo cual es el secreto, que han hecho de diferente.

Cuando tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar alguna de estas comunidades, que debo decir muchas están muy lejos del centro de la ciudad, en medio de montañas y ríos, encontramos la primera Buena Vista, nos recibieron un grupo de chicos, tan empoderados y seguros de sí mismos, conociendo muy bien cuál es su posición dentro de este proyecto, en sus caras se podía notar realmente la emoción de querer saber más sobre los proyecto de este año, sobre los campamentos y los parques nacionales, nos comentaban como en estos tres años trabajando con Amigos habían construido tres paradas de bus y como este querían ayudar a solucionar varios problemas que tenía la cancha de futbol de su comunidad año, al escucharlos atentamente me di cuenta que al principio todos pasaron por lo mismo, nadie les prestaba atención, porque eran jóvenes ignoraban sus ideas, hasta que un día llego este proyecto y las comunidad al ver que habían cambios reales, les dieron una vos dentro de ella, y fue ahí donde entendí que han estado haciendo CASA y AMIGOS de las Américas en particular para tener tanto éxito, lo que los chicos necesitaban eran espacios seguros donde fueran escuchados, donde sus ideas tengan valor, donde encuentren espacios de crecimiento, espacios donde se informen, conozcan y conecten, estamos creando Líderes Comunitarios y los estamos conectando con chicos que también quieren hacer el cambio.

Mi objetivo en este viaje era comprobar y tratar de ponerme en los pies de los voluntarios, visitar comunidades y parques nacionales y ver realmente el impacto que va a tener en los chicos y solo debo decir que la cancha esta lista para que ustedes lleguen, ustedes van tener la oportunidad de trabajar y conocer estos jóvenes, disfruten cada segundo, aprendan todo lo que puedan, estén abiertos a nuevas experiencias, vivir en comunidades rurales y la experiencia que van a tener trabajando y disfrutando en los parques nacionales va a ser única, me gustaría que se preparen, que sean buenos embajadores de su cultura y de su país.
Siempre he dicho que es tan difícil cambiar el mundo, pero que tal si comenzamos por nuestro propio entorno y como dice Margaret Mead, “Nunca dudes que un pequeño grupo de ciudadanos pensantes y comprometidos pueden cambiar el mundo. De hecho, son los únicos que lo han logrado.”

I’m from Costa Rica, and the area of Pérez Zeledón is well known for its coffee and of course you can’t forget the pride of our country, Keylor Navas, the famous Real Madrid goalie who came from a small community in the area.

What I really I never imagined and I must say that I have not seen in any other part of Costa Rica is a network of young people as strong as those who work with our partner agency CASA. From the moment I was introduced to the CASA organization, I was amazed with its history: they literally built their offices! I started wondering how they have stayed motivated and dedicated for so long. What is the secret? What they have done differently?

When we have the opportunity to visit some of the host communities, many are beautiful—in the midst of mountains and rivers! After a 30 minute ride, we arrived at the first community, Buena Vista, and we met a group of youth who was so empowered and confident. They knew exactly who we were and you could tell by their faces how excited they were about this year’s project. They wanted to know more about the campamentos and work in the National Parks. They said that this year they want to help to fix their community’s soccer field. Listening to them, I began to realize that all the stories were very similar. They have great ideas to solve problems but no one ever listened to them because they were so young. Once AMIGOS and CASA started working here, the communities saw that they had the capacity to make real changes. The community gave them a voice. I realized this is why CASA and AMIGOS have been so successful: young people needed safe spaces where they could be heard, where their ideas had value, where they can grow, spaces where they can learn, understand, and connect. We are creating community leaders and we are connecting them with others who also want to make change in the world.

My goal for this summer is to be inspired by AMIGOS volunteers and host communities. I can’t wait to see the impact this experience will have on everyone who is part of it! I just have to say that Costa Rica is ready for you to arrive. You will have the opportunity to work and meet these young people enjoy every second of your time here, to learn everything you can! Be open to new experiences, like living in rural communities and working in the national parks. I would like you to prepare yourselves to be good ambassadors of your culture and your country.

I have always said that it is so difficult to change the world but we can start with our own environment. As Margaret Mead says: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
