Tierras altas 2023: Meet your Team!

Welcome to the Tierras Altas Project 2023! We are so excited to have you here! My name is Carolina Lopez, and I have the pleasure of being this year’s Project Director for the Tierras Altas program. I’m thrilled to introduce you to the AMIGOS staff team who will work hard to ensure you have fun and learn new and useful things for your life.

Carolina Lopez, Project Director

 

Hi, Tierras Altas Team! My name is Carolina López, I’m from Bogotá, Colombia, where I graduated as a professional in International Relations. For more than 15 years I was an active member of the Colombian scouts, in which I acquired many skills for life and my vocation for social causes, the defense of human rights and community work.

After graduating from university, I began working with different social organizations throughout the Colombian territory, in projects focused on post-conflict, migration, education, and culture. However, for as long as I can remember I have volunteered in all kinds of projects, which have allowed me to meet incredible people and know another perspective on the reality of the world.

Among my passions is traveling – I had the opportunity to live more than 3 years in the United States where I discovered beautiful places there and made new friends. I love to dance, go hiking, and sit down to read a good book in a coffee shop. This is my first time working with AMIGOS, so I am very excited to share this adventure with you and that we can take an incredible memory of this experience. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

 

¡Hola, equipo de Tierras Altas! Mi nombre es Carolina López, soy de Bogotá-Colombia; donde me gradué como profesional en Relaciones Internacionales. Durante más de 15 años hice parte activa de los scouts de Colombia, en el cuál adquirí muchas habilidades para la vida y mi vocación por las causas sociales, la defensa de los derechos humanos y el trabajo comunitario.

Luego de graduarme de la Universidad comencé a trabajar con diferentes organizaciones sociales en todo el territorio colombiano, en proyectos enfocados en postconflicto, migración, educación y cultura. Sin embargo, desde que tengo uso de razón siempre he participado en voluntariados de todo tipo, los cuales me han permitido conocer gente increíble y conocer otra perspectiva de la realidad del mundo.

Entre mis pasiones está viajar -tuve la oportunidad de vivir más de 3 años en Estados Unidos y descubrir hermosos lugares allí, además de hacer grandes amigos-; me encanta bailar; ir de caminata y sentarme a leer un buen libro en un café. Esta es mi primera vez trabajando con AMIGOS, así que estoy muy emocionada por compartir esta aventura junto a ustedes y que nos llevemos un increíble recuerdo de esta experiencia ¡Estoy ansiosa de conocerlos!

 

Luisa Correa, Associate Project Director 

Hello Tierra Altas! My name is Luisa, I was born in Cartagena, Colombia and I am currently studying Political Science and International Relations in the same city. A little about my history working with AMIGOS: in 2021 I was part of the staff for Youth Ambassadors as a virtual assistant of the program and I enjoyed my experience so much, that I decided to join as a project staff last summer in the project in La Costa, Ecuador.

Then, in October 2022, I was part of the Social Impact Accelerator as a mentor. In recent years, I I discovered a passion for community work and cultural research programs and working with Youth Ambassadors was the spark that ignited my curiosity for programs like those offered by AMIGOS. 

This will be my second experience working in one of AMIGOS’ in-person programs and I am super grateful for the opportunity to work again with the organization in a new role as APD – and I am very excited to meet all the members of the team, our volunteers, and our partner agencies. See you soon!

 

¡Hola, Tierra Altas! Mi nombre es Luisa, nací en Cartagena, Colombia y actualmente estudio Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales en la misma ciudad. Un poco sobre mi historia trabajando con AMIGOS: en 2021 hice parte del staff para Youth Ambassadors como asistente virtual del programa y disfruté tanto mi experiencia que decidí unirme como project staff el verano pasado en el proyecto de La Costa, Ecuador. Luego, en octubre de 2022 hice parte del Social Impact Accelerator como mentora. 

En los últimos años he descubierto una pasión por el trabajo comunitario y los programas de inmersión cultural y trabajar con Youth Ambassadors fue la chispa que encendió mi curiosidad por programas como los que ofrece AMIGOS.

Esta será mi segunda experiencia trabajando en uno de los programas presenciales de AMIGOS y super agradecida por la oportunidad de trabajar de nuevo con la organización en nuevo rol como APD y estoy muy emocionada de conocer a todos los miembros del equipo, a nuestros voluntarios y a nuestras agencias asociadas. ¡Nos vemos pronto!

 

Ricardo Ramos, Project Supervisor

 

Hey there! I’m Ricardo and I was born and raised in Mexico until I moved to San Antonio, Texas when I was 9. These days, I’m living in Austin where I’m a bartender for a living and have the best roommates I could possibly ask for: my girlfriend and my dog. I’m really into soccer, photography, and traveling. I play soccer frequently and I started my own photography small business with graduation photoshoots. 

When it comes to traveling, my highlights have been Paris, Dubai, NY, Seattle, and LA. When I’m not doing any of those things, I’m usually busy collecting records and CDs, which is getting pretty big. It started out as a hobby, but it might just be my inheritance to my kids. 

This summer, I’m anxious and excited to break away from my usual routine and seek discomfort in a completely new setting with completely new people. 

 

¡Hola! Soy Ricardo y nací y crecí en México hasta que me mudé a San Antonio, Texas cuando tenía 9 años. Hoy en día, vivo en Austin donde trabajo como bartender y vivo con mis dos compañeros favoritos: mi novia y mi perro. Me encanta el fútbol, la fotografía y viajar. Juego fútbol con frecuencia y comencé mi propio negocio de fotografía con sesiones de fotos de graduación.

En cuanto a los viajes, algunos de mis destinos favoritos han sido París, Dubai, Nueva York, Seattle y Los Ángeles. Cuando no estoy haciendo ninguna de esas cosas, generalmente estoy ocupado coleccionando discos de vinilo y CD, lo cual se está convirtiendo en algo bastante grande. Comenzó como un pasatiempo, pero tal vez sea mi herencia para mis hijos.

Este verano, estoy ansioso y emocionado por salir de mi rutina habitual y buscar nuevas experiencias en un entorno completamente nuevo con personas completamente diferentes.

 

Abigail Krenz, Supervisora de Proyecto

 

Hi Everybody, my name is Abigail and I will be your project supervisor in Tierras Altas this summer! I am a rising sophomore at Pomona College in California, where I am studying international relations. I am particularly passionate about language justice, housing policy, and health equity. Outside my classes, I volunteer as an English tutor for Arabic-speaking refugees, share Spanish-to-English translation resources at a local hospital, and work with a Tongan American community center to coordinate health resources. After I graduate, I hope to work for an NGO to support equitable access to food, clean water, education, and health care. 

I am working with AMIGOS this summer for the same reasons I fell in love with this organization in high school. I was drawn to its community-based development model, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and focus on authentic cultural immersion. 

I traveled to Ecuador in 2021, and for the first time, I learned, told stories, and built relationships in Spanish. I was challenged and inspired from the moment I landed in the country to when I left. The relationships I made on the project have lasted to this day: My supervisor is now a trusted mentor, and I’ve kept in touch with my best friend from the trip from across continents. I am so honored to now join AMIGOS project staff. 

I look forward to mentoring volunteers as they adjust to a new culture, learn about themselves, improve their Spanish, and grow as leaders. 

 

Mi nombre es Abigail y seré su supervisora en el proyecto de Tierras Altas este verano. Soy estudiante de segundo año en Pomona College en California, donde estoy estudiando relaciones internacionales. Me apasiona especialmente la justicia lingüística, la política de alojamiento, y la equidad en salud. Fuera de mis clases, comparto recursos de traducción de español a inglés en un hospital local, practico inglés con refugiados de habla árabe, y trabajo con un centro comunitario tongano americano para coordinar recursos de salud. Después de graduarme, espero trabajar para una ONG que apoye el acceso equitativo a alimentos, agua, educación, y asistencia médica.

Estoy trabajando con AMIGOS este verano por las mismas razones por las que me enamoré de esta organización en la escuela secundaria. Me atrajo su modelo de desarrollo comunitario, su compromiso con la diversidad y la inclusión, y su enfoque en la inmersión cultural. 

Viajé a Ecuador con AMIGOS en 2021, y por primera vez, pude aprender, contar historias, y hacer amigos todo en español. Fui desafiada e inspirada desde el momento en que llegué al país hasta el momento en que me fui. Las relaciones que hice en el proyecto han durado: mi supervisora ahora es una mentora de confianza y me he mantenido en contacto con mi mejor amiga del programa a través de dos continentes. Me siento honrada de unirme ahora al personal de AMIGOS. 

Espero guiar a los voluntarios a medida que se adaptan a una nueva cultura, aprenden sobre sí mismos, mejoran su español, y crecen como líderes.
