Valle y Veraguas: Hosting and Toasting

This week during our AMIGOS venture, we arrived at Mata Oscura. After arriving at the turtle protection site, we moved into our host family homes. Most people were put in homes with one other volunteer. With the help of brains and bug spray we adjusted to our host family and this new beautiful culture. The following day half the group went on a breezy beach walk while the others played cards and volleyball and took in the scenery. After, the group went on a walk to tour some of the close host family homes and visited the local stores where we bought snacks and ice cold refreshments. We assembled on the beach to finalize our day, we sat on the soft black sand while hearing the enchanting sound of the waves.
Esta semana durante nuestra aventura Amigos, llegamos a Mata Oscura. Después de llegar al sitio de conservación de las tortugas, conocimos a nuestras familias anfitrionas. Casi todos se están quedando en una casa con otro/a voluntario/a del programa. Con la ayuda de nuestros cerebros y mucho repelente, nos acostumbramos a la rutina diaria de nuestras familias y esta hermosa cultura. El día siguiente, la mitad del grupo caminaban por la playa y disfrutaban de la brisa mientras otros jugaban a naipes y al voleibol y gozaban del paisaje. Después, el grupo recorrió la comunidad para visitar a algunas de las familias anfitrionas más cercanas y las tienditas cercanas donde compramos snacks y bebidas frías. Nos juntamos en la playa para cerrar el día, donde nos sentamos en la arena negra y suave mientras escuchábamos a las olas encantadoras.
The following day, we built a ramp to accompany handicap people to the turtle sanctuary. A few hours later the group participated in building a mural out of recycled bottle caps from Valle de Anton. After work, we visited each other’s homes and met the other families. Everyone was very welcoming to us as new family members, and made us feel like a part of the community. Jacinto, a marine biologist and turtle lover, was kind enough to give us a detailed presentation on the four kinds of turtles and their evolution. We learned about which turtles nest along this beach and developed a newfound fascination for this beautiful species. The adjustment is truly a learning experience and we look forward to what we will learn while here.
El día después, empezamos a construir una rampa para ayudar a los visitantes con capacidades diferentes. También el grupo empezó a crear un mural de las tapitas de botellas recicladas. Después de terminar el voluntariado, nos visitamos en las casas de nuestras familias anfitrionas. Todos nos han dado una bienvenida muy acogedora como nuevos miembros de la comunidad. Jacinto, un biólogo marino y aficionado de las tortugas, nos dio un discurso sobre los cuatro tipos de tortugas y su evolución. Aprendimos sobre las tortugas que anidan en esta playa y desarrollamos una profunda fascinación con estos animales increíbles. El cambio es verdaderamente una experiencia de aprendizaje y estamos emocionados de continuar este aprendizaje aquí.
