In our final week with AMIGOS this summer, we relocated to the town of Santa Maria in order to begin our volunteer work with various coffee farms. Santa Maria is a beautiful town that we have all spent our breaks wandering through, and Las Cabinas Cecilia, where we are staying, offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains. These mountains house the three coffee farms where we have been spending our mornings: Döga, Vamay, and Don Lucas.
Döga is a coffee farm located roughly 30 minutes outside of Santa Maria, with coffee plants both onsite and closer to the Pacific. The group of volunteers led by Cecilia have spent their mornings of the last four days here and by the sea, doing everything from sorting the good coffee beans from the bad to relocating coffee plants. The group led by Shayan at Don Lucas, located on the way to Döga, have filled their time with things like roasting and packaging coffee beans. The last group, at Vamay and supervised by Helen, have been doing a bit more hands-on work. Each day they are driven up the mountain and spend time terracing, planting coffee trees, fertilizing coffee trees with coffee shells, and other similar tasks. Vamay is a coffee farm led by Delphina, who has another connection to the volunteers through Bean Voyage.
Bean Voyage is the organization that has been introducing the AMIGOS volunteers to the ins-and-outs of coffee production and the people involved through a series of sessions dispersed throughout these last two weeks. The majority of these sessions focus on the women involved in coffee production, like Delphina or Francini, who leads Döga. Through Bean Voyage, volunteers addressed the stereotypes of women, learned about agricultural intermediaries, and a variety of other topical information that most of us never consider when buying coffee. Through our volunteer work and lessons with Bean Voyage, we have all learned to be more conscious consumers, and we will take the insight we gained with us back to the United States.
En nuestra semana final de AMIGOS, hemos completado nuestra cuarentena y nos moveremos a la ciudad que se llama Santa María para empezar nuestros proyectos con unas fincas de café. Santa Maria es una ciudad muy bonita donde todos nosotros pasamos tiempo explorando. Las Cabanas Cecilia, donde estamos viviendo, ofrece unas imágenes bonitas de las montañas alrededor de la ciudad. Estas montañas tienen las tres fincas de café donde estuvimos pasando tiempo en las mañanas: Döga, Vamay, y Don Lucas.
Döga es una finca de café que está aproximadamente a 30 minutos de Santa Maria, con plantas de café cerca de la ciudad y también cerca del mar. El grupo de voluntarios con Cecilia estaba eligiendo los frijoles buenos de café y separando los de los malos y también moviendo las plantas de café. El grupo que está en Don Lucas con Shayan ha pasado tiempo tostando y empacando los frijoles de café. El otro grupo a Vamay y con Helen estaban haciendo trabajo más duro. Cada día, su familia anfitriona les maneja arriba la montaña y ellos pasan tiempo trazando, plantando los árboles de café, fertilizando los árboles también, y otros trabajos similares. Vamay es una finca de café manejada en parte por Delphina, y ella tiene un otro connecion de los voluntarios entre un organización se llama Bean Voyage.
Bean Voyage es la organización que estaba enseñando a los voluntarios de AMIGOS sobre la producción de café y la gente que la produce entre una serie de tres sesiones durante las dos semanas finales. La mayoría de estas clases se enfocan en las mujeres en la producción de café, como Delphina o Francini, quien maneja Döga. En Bean Voyage, los voluntarios estudiaron los estereotipos sobre mujeres, aprendieron sobre los intermediarios de agricultura, y otra información relevante a la tópica de la producción de café que la mayoría de nosotros nunca consideramos cuando estamos comprando café. Entre nuestro trabajo voluntario con Bean Voyage, todos aprendemos a ser más conscientes cuando compramos café, y vamos a aplicar esta información nueva con nosotros cuando regresamos a Los Estados Unidos.
