A 2 or 3 Week Eco-Conservation Experience throughout Inland and Coastal Panama

Project Overview

Project Focus Areas: Wildlife protection, sea turtle habitat protection, cultural connection, and hands-on conservation

Head to Panama this summer to explore how local communities conserve the country’s unique plants and wildlife! Spend a few days in the beautiful town of Valle de Antón, nestled in the crater of an extinct volcano, and take in the area’s natural beauty. Visit the vibrant local market, the magical Butterfly Haven, and hike amidst the stunning scenery surrounded by mountains.

Next, travel to a quiet town on Panama’s Pacific coast, home to a sea turtle protection project, where you’ll live with a local host family. Enjoy the pristine coastline while engaging in hands-on volunteer work: support nesting and hatching sea turtles, help maintain and beautify conservation spaces, and participate in cultural activities that offer insight into local life and environmental efforts. Connect with your host family and meet local youth who are actively involved in protecting their natural surroundings.

Program Model

Our Panama: El Pacifico project is an AMIGOS DISCOVER program. Ready to step outside your comfort zone and experience something new? AMIGOS Discover programs are perfect for high school students seeking a short, immersive service-learning experience. Spend 2 to 3 weeks abroad, live with a host family, and volunteer alongside your local community with a tight-knit group and daily support from a project staff team. Whether you’re doing beach cleanups, helping lead youth activities, or gaining insights from local leaders, every day is a new chance to learn, grow, and make a difference. Earn 12 service hours a week and college credit on 3-week projects while discovering a new culture, making new friends, and taking the first steps to becoming a global leader. No Spanish is required for AMIGOS Discover programs. Just bring your curiosity and sense of adventure!

"My favorite part of my AMIGOS program was my time in community, especially with my host families. I really enjoyed helping with the turtle hatchery, picking up trash, and painting FUNDAT. It really felt like I was making a difference."

Spotlight on Wildlife Conservation and Culture

Practice your Spanish while making new friends and volunteering with two amazing community-based organizations! Travel to the crater of an extinct volcano surrounded by mountains and cloud forests. Learn about the local ecosystem and visit a butterfly haven. Then, travel to help protect sea turtles and learn about marine conservation from experts at a local agency.

You will spend part of your time in one of the few inhabited volcanic craters in the world, surrounded by mountains and clouds. Then, live like a local in a rural community on the Pacific Coast.

In the Coclé Province (Valle de Anton), we hike through cloud forests inside the crater of an extinct volcano, visit the colorful Butterfly Haven, and explore the vibrant local market!

In the Veraguas Province, learn about climate change and its impact on mangroves and on endangered wildlife. Explore sea turtle conservation and participate in night patrols and nesting activities. Spend time with local youth leaders and dive into the Panamanian traditions.

We partner with FUNDAT, a sea turtle protection and sustainable development organization. Earn 24 (2-week program) to 36 (3-week program) service hours while supporting local initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this project good for?

Students looking to step out of their comfort zone with the support of supervisors and fellow volunteers. Students will divide their time between group housing and a homestay, which includes meeting up with their group for daily activities on weekdays and spending time with their host families on weekends. Please also view this program’s requirements.

What makes this project unique?

This project exposes you to two different microclimates and ways of life in Panama. The first site is a small town in a valley surrounded by lush, green mountains. It is one of the most biodiverse areas in the country. The second site is in a rural fishing village along the Pacific Coast. It is home to a local organization working hard to build a culture of conservation and wildlife protection in the local community. Both sites have completely different terrain and weather, and show two different sides of Panama.

What is AMIGOS’ history in the region?

AMIGOS initially worked in Panama from 1981 to 1987. In 1987, the U.S. Marines invaded Panama and ousted the Panamanian president, Manuel Noriega. When this occurred, AMIGOS suspended its projects in Panama. We returned to the country in 2004, when we opened a project in the provinces of Veraguas and Coclé.

Over the years, we have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of volunteers and community members and forge ties with various government and social organizations. We have had projects in the Azuero Peninsula, the Kuna Yala Region, Coclé, Veraguas, and Chiriquí provinces.

In 2022, we resumed operations and reestablished our partnerships in the country with two projects. We currently have four projects in Panama, and we continue to expand our work with partner agencies and communities.

Can I receive college credit?

Yes, for the 3-week program. Note, we do not offer college credit on any 2-week program.

How many service hours can I receive?

You can earn 24 (2-week program) to 36 (3-week program) service hours for this program.

What are the accommodations like for this project?

We use a combination of dormitory-style lodging and homestays. At the beginning and end of the trip (briefing and debriefing), the entire group will stay together at shared lodging sites. For the community experience, volunteers will be in the same rural community. They will typically live with host families in groups of one to three volunteers and engage in daily activities within their smaller cohorts.

What is the food like?

Most meals will be typical Panamanian food, including a protein (chicken, beef, pork, or eggs), rice, beans or lentils, a fresh salad, and sides like fried plantains, yucca, or hojaldras (fried dough). This project can accommodate vegetarians.

What about the climate and terrain?

The first site, Valle de Antón, is in a lush valley surrounded by green hills, with temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the mid-80s. The second site is a rural, beachside area situated among the small communities of Mata Oscura, Filipinas, and Loma de Quebro, where temperatures range from the low 80s to the high 90s. The second location experiences high humidity, and since it is the rainy season, you can expect tropical showers for a few hours each day at both sites.

Can you teach me some slang?

Sure! Here are some important ones to remember. Aguacero = rain shower. Ofi = okay. Qué xopa = What’s up? ¡Ayala vida! = an expression of surprise or misfortune. Fren = Friend. Pipa = coconut.

This experience exceeded my expectations because of the connections I made with fellow volunteers and people in the host community. I specifically connected with my host sister, Ayleen. She helped me a lot with my Spanish and made me feel more confident while leading activities with the local kids.

Program Pillars

Ethical Service

Learn how to create ethical service initiatives by working with–not for–a community, engaging local organizations and partners, and evaluating the impact of your work. AMIGOS works with trusted local partners that are passionate and committed to working with our volunteers on community service projects.

Cultural Humility

Cultural humility is a process of both self-reflection about your own culture as well as learning about other cultures. You will examine your own beliefs and cultural identity and gain an understanding of how structural racism has impacted societies and the roles that communities can take to lead systemic change.

Leadership

Learn, grow, and discover your leadership potential! Explore your sense of purpose and start to establish your personal goals and values through introspection and inquiry.

Why Choose AMIGOS?

Practice Spanish

AMIGOS programs provide a unique opportunity to experience a new culture. Volunteers report increased fluency in Spanish after completing our program. Activities go far beyond the classroom — you’ll lead activities in Spanish, learn local slang, and increase your confidence with real-world practice. You will not believe how fast your Spanish improves when you use it in conversation every day!

Have an Adventure

Travel to must-see spots in your host country! You’ll travel as a group to experience unique destinations like volcanoes, ancient ruins, national parks, and historical sites. You’ll get to see these places from the distinct perspective of someone who has spent time in that country and learned about the culture firsthand. Plus, you’ll bond with their fellow volunteers and have fun!

Travel with Trust

AMIGOS is the industry leader in health and safety management. Our staff is prepared to help you with any situation that may arise. Each volunteer receives a personalized emergency plan, as well as support from local staff teams and a professional 24-hour On-Call Safety Team of travel specialists, doctors, and mental health specialists. A Health and Wellness Coordinator is on staff with the group throughout the duration of their stay. AMIGOS also has an established network of vetted medical clinics and hospitals throughout the region.
