Program Model

Our Panama: El Valle project is an AMIGOS EXPLORE program. If you’re a high school student ready for something deeper than a typical trip abroad, AMIGOS Explore programs offer 2- to 3.5-week adventures that blend service, leadership, and cultural exchange. You’ll live with a host family in a small group of volunteers, work side-by-side with local youth, and lead service projects that truly matter. You’ll also grow your Spanish skills, earn college credit (3-week programs only), complete 20 service hours per week, and see the world from a whole new perspective. Explore programs include both group travel activities and more independent experiences, with a project supervisor in the community with volunteers approximately 80% of the time. It’s meaningful, challenging, and unforgettable—designed for young leaders who want more than a vacation.

"I think it has made me feel more grateful for all the things I have, and it makes me want to give back to my community more. It was very nice to be without a screen, and I’m glad I didn’t have a phone."

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this project good for?

This project is perfect for energetic young people who want to step out of their comfort zones and practice their Spanish through daily, meaningful interactions with local community members. While it is a short-term project, it offers an immersive rural experience. Volunteers will live with host families, work closely with local youth and children, and receive training on how to engage respectfully with rural communities in Latin America. Please also view this program’s requirements.

What makes this project unique?

You will participate in community-based service projects and local initiatives in rural areas throughout the Coclé province. During your stay, you will address regional challenges through hands-on activities and lead fun, educational, and engaging activities alongside local youth and children. You will immerse yourself in Panamanian culture by connecting with locals, participating in service projects, practicing traditional cooking and dances, and exploring the region through excursions. Also, you will be practicing a lot of Spanish!

What is AMIGOS’ history in the region?

AMIGOS initially worked in Panama from 1981 to 1987. In 1987, the U.S. Marines invaded Panama and ousted the Panamanian president, Manuel Noriega. When this occurred, AMIGOS suspended its projects in Panama. We returned to the country in 2004, when we opened a project in the provinces of Veraguas and Coclé.

Over the years, we have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of volunteers and community members and forge ties with various government and social organizations. We have had projects in the Azuero Peninsula, the Kuna Yala Region, Coclé, Veraguas, and Chiriquí provinces.

In 2022, we resumed operations and reestablished our partnerships in the country with two projects. We currently have four projects in Panama, and we continue to expand our work with partner agencies and communities.

Can I receive college credit?

No. We do not offer college credit on any 2-week program.

How many service hours can I receive?

You can earn 40 service hours on this program.

What are the accommodations like for this project?

We use a combination of dormitory-style lodging and homestays. At the beginning and end of the trip (briefing and debriefing), the entire group will stay together at shared lodging sites. For the community experience, volunteers will be divided into small groups of up to 6 volunteers per community and regularly supported by an AMIGOS supervisor. They will typically live with host families in groups of one to three volunteers and engage in daily activities within their smaller cohorts.

What is the food like?

Most meals will be typical Panamanian food, including a protein (chicken, beef, pork, or eggs), rice, beans or lentils, a fresh salad, and sides like fried plantains, yucca, or hojaldras (fried dough). This project can accommodate vegetarians.

What about the climate and terrain?

The group lodging sites and the rural communities are in the lowlands. The temperature ranges from the mid-70s to the high 90s. There is a lot of humidity in both locations, and it is rainy season, which means there will likely be tropical rain for a few hours every day.

Can you teach me some slang?

Sure! Here are some important ones to remember. Aguacero = rain shower. Ofi = okay. Qué xopa = What’s up? ¡Ayala vida! = an expression of surprise or misfortune. Fren = Friend. Pipa = coconut.

Helping the kids made me feel really special, and building relationships with them was very heartwarming. My favorite part of the program was making connections with the other volunteers and the kids at the school. Getting to play soccer with everyone was very special for me. This experience surpassed my expectations. I think it changed my perspective on life and different cultures.

Program Pillars

Ethical Service

Learn how to create ethical service initiatives by working with–not for–a community, engaging local organizations and partners, and evaluating the impact of your work. AMIGOS works with trusted local partners that are passionate and committed to working with our volunteers on community service projects.

Cultural Humility

Cultural humility is a process of both self-reflection about your own culture as well as learning about other cultures. You will examine your own beliefs and cultural identity and gain an understanding of how structural racism has impacted societies and the roles that communities can take to lead systemic change.

Leadership

Learn, grow, and discover your leadership potential! Explore your sense of purpose and start to establish your personal goals and values through introspection and inquiry.

Why Choose AMIGOS?

Practice Spanish

AMIGOS programs provide a unique opportunity to experience a new culture. Volunteers report increased fluency in Spanish after completing our program. Activities go far beyond the classroom — you’ll lead activities in Spanish, learn local slang, and increase your confidence with real-world practice. You will not believe how fast your Spanish improves when you use it in conversation every day!

Have an Adventure

Travel to must-see spots in your host country! You’ll travel as a group to experience unique destinations like volcanoes, ancient ruins, national parks, and historical sites. You’ll get to see these places from the distinct perspective of someone who has spent time in that country and learned about the culture firsthand. Plus, you’ll bond with their fellow volunteers and have fun!

Travel with Trust

AMIGOS is the industry leader in health and safety management. Our staff is prepared to help you with any situation that may arise. Each volunteer receives a personalized emergency plan, as well as support from local staff teams and a professional 24-hour On-Call Safety Team of travel specialists, doctors, and mental health specialists. A Health and Wellness Coordinator is on staff with the group throughout the duration of their stay. AMIGOS also has an established network of vetted medical clinics and hospitals throughout the region.
